The city and its inhabitants are aware that their quality of life depends, among other things, on a thoughtful use of space. After all, a city isn’t just made up of traffic arteries; rather, it consists largely of spaces where people meet, where they become creative, where they move and relax. To ensure that Zurich’s quality of life remains high in the future, the city’s devel- opment plan focuses on social interaction, health, and open spaces. Two key phrases for this development are “the 2000-watt society”, which refers to the goal of each inhabitant of Zurich reducing their energy usage to no more than 2,000 watts per year, and “urban densification”, denoting the concept of using building areas as effi- ciently as possible and thus freeing up space for other uses.
