Designer Ilse Crawford recounts her quest for the perfect chair and we pay homage to honest materials ranging from good old brick to textiles. We discuss originality with Vuokko Eskolin-Nurmesniemi in her perfect Helsinki home, imperfect harmony with Phillip Lim and artistic dissonance with collector Claus Andersen. We visit the new generation architects living in Poul Henningsen’s ugly house, go to the beach to a secret house by Finn Juhl and pull up a Willy Guhl chair poolside in a house by Richard Neutra. Farshad Farzankia creates artworks especially for our first issue and we go inside the studio of Danish sculptor Sonja Ferlov Mancoba.

By placing architecture at the core of Ark Journal, we want to consider it in the broader context of our lives, reflecting its more humanistic side and celebrating tactility and individual dimensions.
