Issue 1 of Contra was designed by Our Place and includes work from Harley Weir, Forensic Architecture, Oscar Murillo, Akram Khan, Human Rights Watch, Seba Kurtis, Lucy Wood, Embassy for the Displaced, Milja Lindberg, Pierre Mohamed-Petit, System of Systems, Mike Merkenschlager, Konstantin Zhukov and Joshua Brown. Published annually, each issue of Contra will take a theme related to conflict and consider its role in contemporary visual culture. Through a mixture of essays, interviews, photo essays and original artwork, Contra aims to widen the discussion about imagery and its relationship to power, violence and inequality. With this in mind, our target readership is not limited to those that work in arts and media – Contra is open to everyone interested in the creation and consumption of visual ideas.
