Content

Jean-Vincent Simonet – Water-powered
A powerful and emotionally moving start for the magazine: Zurich isn’t just a city at the foot of the mountains; the lake and its rivers and streams have at least as much energy. Jean-Vincent Simonet, star of the fashion scene, presents an unusual portfolio of the city’s secret power source.

Little Italy on Lake Zurich
The magazine’s main focus is on the many-voiced chorus of Zurich’s Italian community: whether cobbler or the queen of boccia; from vegetable expert to the first baker of Italian bread in the city. A large portion of the quality of life in the internationally renowned city of Zurich is thanks to the influences of its Italian immigrants.

The standard for Italian restaurants in Zurich needn’t shirk comparison with the other Italian emigrant metropolis, New York City. In our multifaceted report, we explore the origins of this dolce vita on Lake Zurich and let all the movers and shakers of this scene get a word in edgewise. Photographed by Kira Bunse.

HR Giger
Without the exceptional Swiss artist HR Giger, even the visionary director Scott probably wouldn’t have made it so far. Believe it or not, the film Alien by Ridley Scott from the early Eighties is now finding its third generation of fans. In conversations – as detailed as they are profound – with two of his comrades, we approach this equal-parts difficult and incomparable artistic personality. Photographed by Camille Vivier.

Wu Tsang & Tosh Basco
When internationally famous artists and personalities settle in Zurich, it usually remains a secret for well-known reasons. However, Wu Tsang and her partner Tosh Basco are welcome additions to the Schauspielhaus Zurich theatre and enormous things can be expected of them, not just their mammoth project Moby Dick – they’re also staging a deconstructed version of the Orpheus story. The Schauspielhaus Zurich isn’t just expertly putting itself on the map again, but is also manifesting its reputation as a top-league world theatre. A conversation about the charms of this future-oriented and especially top international creative city in the heart of Europe.
Photographed by Walter Pfeiffer.

Ella Rumpf
Zurich and Tokyo have a clandestine amour fou, something that was mentioned by Michel Comte in the first issue. Now Ella Rumpf, the young star famous for her role as “Tiger Girl,” talks about her past in the world’s largest metropolis (Tokyo: 38 million residents) and why the inhabitants of Japan’s capital have far more in common with the people of Zurich than you might think. What the Parisian-New Yorkers were in the Noughties could be the Zurich-Tokyoites in the future – young jetsetters from the creative class who know how to make best use of the proximity to nature of the Swiss metropolis and the buzz of the Japanese megalopolis. United by an appreciation for the highest quality of life. Photographed by Marc Ashekhame.

Enzo Enea – Green Beauties
There’s a lot of talk about the power of trees at the moment, but do these green giants have more to offer us aesthetically than just being carbon-dioxide annihilation machines? Enzo Enea has founded the singular Tree Museum, where he presents natural artefacts worth protecting and magnificent sculptures in an outdoor area reminiscent of a gallery. One of Switzerland’s most successful landscape architects talks about his passion for trees. Photographed by Nico Krebs und Taiyo Onorato, illustrations by François Berthoud.

Cervelat
It absolutely cannot be helped, no matter what people might say. This sausage, the cervelat, is and remains a Swiss national treasure, and which Swiss and expats alike pay homage to, especially in cosmopolitan Zurich. No matter how you like it best, grilled hot, as a raw snack on the go, directly out of the package in an underground car park, or stylishly celebrated in the forest: the cervelat is delicious. It is thus logical that the poet of our special Swiss-German language and fantastic man Pedro Lenz should offer an ode to the sausage of all sausages. Photographed by Reto Schmid.
