BESIDE Magazine – Issue 6

BESIDE Magazine Issue 6 is here. How can we learn today what used to be passed down to us from previous generations? How can we combine ancestral and contemporary knowledge to forge newly shared rituals? With traditions seemingly disappearing faster than ever, Issue 06 seeks to put into perspective the roles that traditional forms of knowing and doing play in contemporary life.

BESIDE Magazine is a publication from abitibi & co., a Canadian canoe and kayak company. The magazine was funded on Kickstarter. abitibi & co. designs and handcrafts boats that are meant to be used, repaired, and passed down to future generations. With this, their goals are to get more people outdoors, to bring more people together, and to lessen the impact they make on our global habitat. Spending more time outdoors allows us to see, hear, and feel how the wilderness is changing, and gives us a front-row seat to the fragility of our ecosystem. This is a relationship: the more we get to know our natural surroundings, the less willing we’ll be to let them slip away. And so Beside was born: To serve as a stage showcasing the innovative curiosity, the responsible resourcefulness, and the adventurous triumphs of a new community of outdoor enthusiasts who are redefining the scope of this relationship. With their roots planted in the largely French-speaking province of Quebec, Canada, they very much understand the importance of balancing nature with culture and staying true to the heritage of our readership. The resulting magazine will be more than bilingual, instead BESIDE will be the first of its kind to be produced individually in both English et en français.
