Minka Magazine Volume 2 is available now on loremnotipsum.com. Minka Magazine is a bi-annual publication from Canada exploring the outdoors, craft, design, fashion, music and literature. It examines how nature plays a role at informing creativity. Minka are the thatch roof farmhouses found in Japan. Although the houses are full of texture through the raw materials sourced from the surrounding area, the structures are refined and dignified.
The Volume explores a wide range of subjects including perhaps England’s most important contemporary Landscape Gardener – Jinny Blom, and Topiary expert and founder of Japanese gardening tool maker Niwaki, Jake Hobson. There is also an in-depth interview and editorial with fashion designer Evan Kinori, and interview with Canadian Painter and former dancer Darby Milbrath (who did the incredible cover) Notable additions include the featured collection of prehistoric Japanese pottery from the Jomon era, music recommendations by BADBADNOTGOOD, book recommendations by Waubeshig Rice (writer of Moon of the Crusted Snow) and film reviews by Eva Michon (creator of Bad Day Magazine).
We have enlisted Killiehuntly Farmhouse in Scotland to offer our readers recipes from their kitchen. For architecture, we profile Mid-Century Canadian architect Arthur Erickson featuring his 1965 residential project “The Baldwin House”. Finally we have an article written by Environmentalist Richard Joos on the polar migration of the Arctic Tern birds.
From Ancient pottery to gardening, modernist architecture to arctic terms it’s a strange and wonderful mix.

Minka are the thatch roof farmhouses found in Japan. Although the houses are full of texture through the raw materials sourced from the surrounding area, the structures are refined and dignified. In this spirit, a collection of Toronto creatives, colleagues and writers from the UK, Japan and Denmark have assembled the first issue of Minka.
